Interview with ilya kaminsky on april 2, 2019, the poet ilya kaminsky gave a reading as the margolies visiting writer in the writing seminars at johns hopkins university. afterward, he spoke with the poet dora malech, and this interview is an edited version of their conversation. Interview with ilya kaminsky twenty five years after he and his parents fled ukraine, ilya kaminsky went back to odessa, the city of his childhood. as he explored the city, he did not feel that he had truly returned until he removed his hearing aids. he has written that, for him, odessa is ‘a silent city, where the language is invisibly. I recently had the chance to sit down with ilya kaminsky and ask him about his russian literary inheritance, his views on translation and genre, and how we, as poets, might understand the nature of our (both private and public, timeless and contemporary) task. this interview was conducted in january of 2020 at the university of michigan.

Ilya was born in odessa, in what was then the soviet union, in 1977. substantially deaf from the age of four, he spoke no english when he immigrated to the united states with his family at sixteen. he studied at the university of rochester and georgetown university and has a jd from the university of california, hastings college of the law. It was a pleasure working with ilya on this project. he nailed the graphic with his first sketch and i just love looking at all the little details in it. please enjoy this little interview i did with him below!.
